Currency transfer cost calculator

On a large transfer, the real cost is not the wire fee. It is the margin hidden inside the exchange rate. Here is what it means in actual euros.

Banks rarely publish this. On large transfers it commonly sits between 2 and 4 percent. A currency specialist typically prices around 0.4 percent.

How this is calculated

Both routes convert the same amount. The difference is the margin applied over the real mid-market exchange rate. We multiply your amount by each margin to show the cost in euros, and the gap between the two is what staying with your bank costs you on this one transfer.

There is a second saving this calculator cannot show: a specialist lets you lock a rate in advance with a forward contract, so the price of your property cannot drift between signing and completion. Our guide to transferring money to France explains how buyers use it.

Margins vary by provider and by day. Treat this as a realistic order of magnitude, then get a live quote.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my bank cost more than the wire fee?
The real cost is hidden in the exchange rate. Banks typically apply a margin of 2 to 4 percent over the mid-market rate on large transfers, which they do not itemise.

What rate does a currency specialist use?
Specialists price much closer to the mid-market rate, typically within a fraction of a percent, and state their margin openly.

What is a forward contract?
An agreement that locks today's rate for a payment you will make later, usually for a small deposit. It protects your price between signing and completion.
